Will slow travel be the new rich? PDF Print E-mail

New aviation concepts do not pop up every day, and most are not well thought through. Like this one. The product design company Seymourpowell has designed a zeppelin concept for the rich. Suitable for cross-continent travel, so they say, it will be a luxurious ride. The design is focussed to "no stress".

Cruising at 10,000 feet, the travel between LHR and JFK will take about 37 hours is the claim (I think it is dependent on the directions of the wind). Next to that, many restrictions are present to "fly" over the Atlantic Ocean. On top of that, most zeppelins are not really weather-resistant, meaning they can often not take off due to wind or other weather.

Nice design-concept, but is a zeppelin like ship the most optimal? Beautiful renderings though.

Happy new year from Vidamore! PDF Print E-mail

New year 2010Dear visitor,

2009 has been a difficult year for everyone in the business, and 2010 will not magically bring back the times from before. However, tough times forced us to think what is really important for the future.

2010 will be therefore a fantastic year for us! Many of the plans to improve, which were developed the past months, will deliver results. The economy is transforming, not just improving. The rules of the play change, and we will change with them. Innovations are more important than ever.

In that light I would like to wish you and your loved ones a healthy, happy and strong 2010, in every way. Hopefully we will meet again soon to discuss exciting plans.

Nakedness in the airport PDF Print E-mail

There is a weird balance with privacy related items these days. A pilot project involving a "millimeter multi wave" scanner (wiki-link) at Manchester airport (MAN) results in many angry reactions of the public. Perhaps very understandable but I am always surprised with the level of perceived intrusiveness of such devices.

While everybody can see what is in your suitcase in the xray, people feel that their privacy is evaded because someone they don't know, in a remote location, is looking at an image of their body contours in black and white. The face is not recognizable, and clothes are not visible. The picture reveals the same details as a tight bathing suit.

Border passage 2.0 PDF Print E-mail

For a number of government agencies I presented the traveler perspective of future border management. With many governments thinking about programs like ESTA (preregistration for visiting the US, specifically for visa-waived travelling), the number of steps in travelling increases. However, with some smart integration, and the ongoing self-serving trend in the travel industry, the travel-process might even become better. Facilitating travel and border control go hand in hand, if you approach it right.

Courageous American Airlines starts from scratch PDF Print E-mail

American airlines (or at least their parent AMR Corp) has decided to start building a completely new system for all their (reservation, flight information, check-in and CRM) operations according to this article in the Chicago Tribune. A very courageous step, because of the sheer size of the migration, the complexity, the timespan of (only!) four years and the required investment (unknown but estimated to be several hundred millions of dollars).
